No longer does Tyla’s self-titled debut record look like it will be up for R&B at the 67th Grammy Awards. A report from The Hollywood Reporter on Monday (Oct. 21) said that the South African singer is likely to participate in the pop categories.
The Recording Academy’s R&B screening group, which is made up of other artists, songwriters, and producers, “kicked” TYLA to Best Pop Vocal Album, according to the news source. If the “On and On” singer gets nominated, she might have to compete with Sabrina Carpenter’s number one album Short n’ Sweet, Ariana Grande’s “Everlasting Sunshine,” and Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department,” which was number one on the Billboard 200 for 15 weeks.
After hearing the news, Tyla went on X and wrote, “I make it all,” along with an emoji of a face blowing a kiss. Pop, R&B, and acapella sounds were mixed on the musician’s 14-track album debut, which included songs like “Truth or Dare,” “On My Body” with Becky G, and “Butterflies.”
Not only that, but “Water” won Best African Music Performance at the 66th Grammy Awards in February.Tyla said at the MTV Video Music Awards in September that “African music can be pop music too.” On stage to accept the award for Best Afrobeats, she said, “It’s common to lump all African artists together under the term Afrobeats.” There is such a thing as African music, even though Afrobeats has ruled the world and opened many doors for us.
Early this month, TYLA + came out with three new songs. It had Tony Duardo, Optimist Music ZA, and Ez Maestro on “SHAKE AH,” “BACK to YOU,” and “PUSH 2 START.” Tyla is likely to do a lot of shows in South Africa to sell the deluxe. The singer will be in Cape Town’s GrandWest Grand Arena on December 5 and Pretoria’s SunBet Arena on December 7.
