Barack Obama has used hip hop songs a lot during his time in office. People look forward to his playlists every year, and he is friends with famous singers like Beyoncé and JAY-Z. It made perfect sense for Detroit’s own rap star Eminem to introduce Obama at the October 22 Harris gathering. In the past, both men have said nice things about the other. Obama returned the compliment by singing a section of one of Eminem’s biggest hits.We knew this was going to happen.
In his opening speech, Eminem made it clear that he backed Kamala Harris for president. “I think Vice President Harris supports a future for this country,” he said. “Where these freedoms will be protected and upheld.” Then he gave the speech to Barack Obama, who walked out to the famous hit by Eminem called “Lose Yourself.” The ex-president kept praising Harris, but he added some words to make things more interesting. He yelled, “Our palms are sweaty!” “Knees weak, arms are heavy…” The crowd cheered when they heard the “Lose Yourself” line and joined in.
It is well known that Barack Obama loves this song. They talked about “Lose Yourself” when they were promoting his 2020 book A Promised Land. During an IG chat, he said that Meek Mill’s Oscar-winning hit and Jay-Z’s “My 1st Song” helped him get through tough times as president. “When I needed some inspiration on the presidential campaign I often turned to music,” he told me. “It was rap that got my head in the right place.” He said that both songs were inspiring. Emem Shady helped sign the Obama shoutout, and he put an interview on his Instagram Story.
Barack Obama has kept up his habit of releasing his inner Eminem. In 2016, video of the former President getting ready to speak at the Democratic National Convention came out. In the minutes before his speech, he paid close attention to the song and nodded along with it. Not everyone liked Eminem’s choice to sign on with Obama and Harris, though. Elon Musk, a well-known supporter of Donald Trump, tweeted an insulting message about Em before the campaign gathering started. He said the Detroit artist was at odds with Diddy and a “party participant.”
