Central Cee donates £15,000 to help struggling Caribbean restaurant in Herne Hill

British rapper Central Cee gave £15,000 to the owners of a Caribbean restaurant that was blocked off by huge telecoms boxes after his family saw a Southwark News video about how hard it was for them to stay open.

The Guyanese restaurant Umana Yana on Croxted Road has been hidden by the boxes since 2012. The boxes make it impossible for people to see the restaurant from the street.

People driving by can’t see Umana Yana, even though they have “South London’s best” rotis, so business has been slow for the past ten years.

Recently, the famous rapper Central Cee showed up at the restaurant out of the blue. He had heard about their story on social media and wanted to help. The owner, Debbie Monfries, says, “I had no idea that the biggest rapper in the UK would be in my shop.”

The 26-year-old learns how to cook Guyanese food with Debbie in a movie shot by VICE.

As she gives him an apron to wear, he asks, “Do I look the part, yeah?”

Central Cee learned about Umana Yana’s situation for the first time on Southwark News’ TikTok. However, the link went beyond social media. The rapper says in the video, “My brother showed [the TikTok] to my dad, and he said he used to come here.”
