In a new documentary about the singer, R. Kelly’s daughter with his wife Andrea Kelly talks about how her father reportedly abused her sexually.
Karma: A Daughter’s Journey, the first part of a two-part exposΓ© about Kelly and his relationship with his children, came out on October 11 on TVEI Networks. TMZ says that in the movie, his daughter Buku Abi (born Joanne Kelly) talks about something that happened to her when she was eight or nine years old.
The woman, who is now 26 years old, says she woke up to R. Kelly touching her while she was still asleep. In a clip for the documentary, Abi talks about the event that changed her life.
“He was everything to me.” “I didn’t want to believe it happened for a long time,” she says as she cries. “He might have been a bad person, but I didn’t think he would do something to me.” I really think that one instant changed everything in my life.
In another part of the trailer, which also shows her mother and brother Robert Kelly Jr., Buku Abi says she won’t be taking her son to see her father and gives more details about their broken relationship, which he has blamed on his ex-wife.
She then says, “He knows exactly why we can’t have the relationship we would have liked to have with him.” “Nobody wants to be the child of the father who is out here hurting women and children,” she says.
Even though Joanne Kelly may be talking about this claimed event in public for the first time, she has made similar claims before.
TMZ says she told her mother about it in 2009, which is about two years after it happened. Back then, Andrea Kelly put in a report and named her daughter Jane Doe. But they were told the time limit had passed.
Jennifer Bonjean, R. Kelly’s lawyer, told the news source that her client “vehemently denies these allegations.”
“His ex-wife made the same claim years ago,” Bonjean wrote. “Illinois Department of Children and Family Services looked into it and found it to be false.β Anyone who made the “film” didn’t even bother to get in touch with Mr. Kelly or his team to give him a chance to deny these false claims.
In 2022, a grand jury found R. Kelly guilty of six of the thirteen federal charges he was facing. These included three child pornography charges for sexually abusing four girls, three of whom were minors.
The man from Chicago was also found guilty of making videos of himself sexually assaulting his goddaughter, who is 14 years old. This led to three more charges of making sex tapes with a child.
A judge in Chicago gave him a 20-year prison term. While Kelly was in New York serving a 30-year sentence for racketeering, the judge decided that all but one year of his sentence would be served at the same time. This was a victory for Kelly.
This week, however, the Supreme Court officially turned down R. Kelly’s request to overturn his sex crime charges.CNN says the Supreme Court didn’t even say yes to hearing the case on October 7. The singer who is in trouble with the law sent in his plea in July, saying that the charges against him are now too late because the crimes happened decades ago.
Kelly was found guilty of crimes that happened in the mid-1990s, so his lawyers tried to say that the PROTECT Act, which he was charged with breaking, doesn’t apply to his case because it didn’t become law until 2003. However, prosecutors were able to show that the law’s statute of limitations are indefinite, which meant that the singer’s lawyers lost.
The lawyer for Kelly said that the Act’s longer statute of limitations doesn’t apply to the charges against her client because Congress didn’t include a clause that lets the law apply to claimed behavior that happened before 2003βonly after.
