Even though Will Smith has been a father for thirty-one years, he will never forget the “terrifying” moment he became a parent.
The 56-year-old is the father to Jaden, 26, and Willow, 23, whom he shares with his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. He also has a 31-year-old son, Trey, with his previous wife, Sheree Zampino.
at his appearance on Thursday at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles for An Evening with Will Smith, Will discussed his 1997 song “Just the Two of Us,” which he composed at “probably one of the most terrifying times of my life.”
Will told the audience, “It’s when my son… Trey was born,” at the age of 24.
He began to cry and said: “It’s crazy, but you’re like, I cannot tell you what it was like bringing that child home on that first night and realizing that he was my responsibility.”
“He’s cool now, thank God – he’s going to be 32 this year.”
Parenting “was one of the first things, the first real things in my life that really shook me to my core,” Will continued.
Will recalled that first night with emotion, reliving the night he brought Trey home from the hospital. I can’t even discuss it.
This is because I had been talking a lot about my father and all the things he didn’t do. Then I thought, “Oh no, now it’s my turn.”
“I just collapsed, and I made one of the most sternest vows I have ever given to a person. that I would make every effort to be a good father to you.”
The night he wrote Just the Two of Us, Will said, wiping away his tears.
Will provided additional information around Trey’s birth: “I had just opened my TV, and his mother’s and Sheree’s water broke. The TV handbook was a thousand pages long, and I was having trouble setting it up.
A thousand pages made up the book. I required a thousand pages of information to set up this TV because it was so thick and multilingual.
“I recall bringing him home and placing him in the bassinet,” he continued. Cedas-Sinai didn’t even give me a leaflet before sending me home with a baby.
Will previously acknowledged that his marriage to Jada and the birth of their children had a “impact” on his firstborn kid, which led to Trey and Will becoming separated following his divorce from Sheree.
“When you get divorced and then start another family, that had effects on Trey that we’re still healing and overcoming,” he commented on his Facebook Watch show, Will’s Bucket List, in 2019.
“There has truly been enough growth in wisdom and emotional maturity over the past two years to be able to tenderly handle the problems. We’re going to start building a loving, heavenly friendship.
Will disclosed in 2018 that after he and Sheree parted ways, Trey felt “betrayed and abandoned” by him.
He said, “It has not always been like this between Trey & I,” as the description for a cute Instagram video of the two of them.
“After my divorce from his mother, we battled for years. He felt abandoned and deceived. Recovering and reestablishing a loving relationship with my gorgeous son is a wild blessing! @treysmith0011.
