Lil Durk opens up about family struggles and desires for Change

By the grace and mercy of Allah, Big Durk, who had spent 26 years serving a life sentence, made his re-entry into society on July 19, 2019. For many, the road to redemption is seldom traveled, but for Big Durk, now known as Abdul Haqq, this journey proved to be different. A transformed man with a new purpose, Abdul Haqq returned to society with a mission to uplift and inspire the youth, using his own life as a cautionary example.

Born Dontay Banks, the fourth of ten children, Abdul Haqq faced the responsibility of caring for his family from a young age. With three older brothers already in prison and a mother battling drug addiction, he shouldered the burden of supporting the household.

His life took a significant turn when their family was evicted due to his mother’s addiction. Rather than relocating with them, Abdul Haqq chose to live in a car near their former home. Despite these challenges, he remained committed to attending school and maintaining his dignity until an illegal venture led to a life sentence.

As a father of five, Abdul Haqq reconciled with the fact that he would miss significant life moments with his children. Determined to be the best father possible from behind bars, he devoted his phone call minutes to staying connected with each of his children. The title of “father” was one he wore with honor and never allowed his time in prison to hinder his role.

In addition to his biological children, Abdul Haqq now serves as a mentor to at-risk youth, leveraging his life story and experiences with gang culture to connect with young men facing similar challenges. Known as an “OG” in the streets due to his past, he commands respect and honor among these young men. His influence and relatability set him apart, allowing him to make a lasting impact as a mentor, a role amplified by his status as the father of rap superstar Lil Durk.

Tragically, Abdul Haqq lost his oldest son, affectionately known as Dthang, shortly after his release from prison. Remembered as a vibrant and light-filled soul, Dthang’s passing serves as a painful reminder that fuels Abdul Haqq’s commitment to his mission of positively impacting the youth, especially those from his beloved Chicago community. Currently residing in Chicago with his wife, Ericka Johnson, Abdul Haqq finds solace in traveling and spending quality time with their family and friends.
