In a brief conversation with Russ at the beginning of the music video, Will Smith alludes to his attempt to regain his public image after slapping comedian Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. The outburst resulted in the 55-year-old star being banned from attending any Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ceremonies for the next 11 years.

Will Smith has been teasing his return to music for the past few months, appearing at Coachella in April, followed by his first live performance of “You Can Make It” at the BET Awards in June.
