Stone Mecca had a passion for rock, but he also enjoyed listening to hip-hop. It was after a session with Ice Cube that Stone Mecca truly delved into the fusion of hip-hop and guitar on the West Coast

In a recent interview, Stone Mecca, a highly sought-after session guitarist and multi-instrumentalist in the hip-hop scene, discussed his journey as a musician, his unique style, and his experiences working with notable artists like Snoop Dogg and Wu-Tang Clan.

Despite the guitar not being the primary instrument in hip-hop, Stone Mecca has been instrumental in incorporating it into the genre. Dating back to the ’90s, he has contributed his guitar skills to albums by prominent West Coast artists such as Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, and Eazy-E, as well as collaborating with the Wu-Tang Clan and RZA.

Stone Mecca’s love for rock music initially drew him to the guitar, but it was a session with Ice Cube that sparked his interest in blending hip-hop with guitar elements. Despite challenges faced by producers unfamiliar with guitar nuances, Stone Mecca’s passion and innovative approach have allowed him to seamlessly integrate guitar flourishes and heavy metal structures into hip-hop compositions.

Self-taught on the guitar, Stone Mecca attributes his unique style and individuality to this learning experience. His ability to develop exercises to strengthen his fingers and explore different scales has shaped his distinctive sound and musical perspective.

Reflecting on his session work with artists like Snoop Dogg, Stone Mecca recalls using a Telecaster guitar from the early ’90s, along with effects pedals such as the DOD Envelope Filter and a Zoom pedal. His contributions to albums like Snoop Dogg’s “No Limit Top Dogg” allowed him creative freedom to experiment and enhance tracks with his guitar expertise.

Stone Mecca’s collaboration with Wu-Tang Clan and RZA further expanded his musical horizons, particularly in live performances where he serves as the musical director. He emphasizes the importance of adding new elements to live renditions while staying true to the essence of the original recordings.

Currently, Stone Mecca primarily relies on a customized B.C. Rich Bich guitar for his performances, equipped with special-wоund pickups and a floating whammy bar to suit his unique playing style.

Looking ahead, Stone Mecca has a busy schedule lined up with more shows alongside Wu-Tang Clan and plans to work on a new solo project in the near future. His continuous dedication to his craft and passion for pushing musical boundaries ensure that his journey as a musician remаins vibrant and exciting.
