Ice Cube Clarifies Dr. Dre’s Absence from N.W.A. Grammy Acceptance
During the recent Grammy Awards where N.W.A. received a lifetime achievement award, Dr. Dre was noticeably absent from the group’s representation in LA. Ice Cube, however, took a moment to explain Dre’s nonattendance, stating, “My man, Dr. Dre, is not here. He wаnted to make sure I let you know he’s not hating. He’s a billionaire. He’s got things to do.” Cube went on to commend Dre, acknowledging his brilliance, talent, and leadership.
Reflecting on the surreal experience of receiving a Grammy for their musical contributions, Cube expressed the group’s early awareness that such recognition was unlikely when they started making music in the mid-’80s. He mentioned, “We knew when we started to do music in 1985, ’86, ’87 that a Grammy was not in the cards for us, with the type of music we were doing. We actually didn’t think we would ever even get on the radio. We were cool with that.”
Ice Cube, recently honored with a lifetime achievement Grammy, has been on a winning streak in terms of awards. In January, he received the inaugural Community Impact Award from the Basketball Hall of Fаme. Cube shared his surprise and gratitude, stating, “This is big time! I’ve had a passion for music, and in movies and sports. I’ve ended up in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fаme — not reaching for that, but just having the passion at the right time.”
Additionally, Cube expressed his unexpecteԀ joy at being included in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fаme, emphasizing that the recognition was not something he had anticipated. He explained, “It was a total surprise. Of course, we felt like our position when it comes to the NBA has been publicized, and so we didn’t think we had the shot to ever be involved with the Basketball Hall of Fаme. But what they explained to us was that they’re not the NBA Hall of Fаme; they’re the Basketball Hall of Fаme. They honor high school, college, pros, and they see the BIG3 as a great asset to the game. And so you just never think about it, and here we are.”
