Lil Wayne vs. Birdman Beef: Did Cash Money Force Damian Lillard To Remove Lil Wayne From Album?

Damian Lillard, a point guard for the Portland Trail Blazers, spends his free time as his rap alter ego, Dame D.O.L.L.A., when he’s not tearing up the NBA. Lillard’s debut album, “The Letter O,” including cameos by Jamie Foxx, Raphael Saadiq, Juvenile, and Lil Wayne, was released on October 21. Regretfully, Lillard was forced to take Lil Wayne out of the record a few days after its release.

The NBA player announced the news on Twitter. He tweeted, “Unfortunately, I have to take Lil Wayne out of the #TheLetterO song ‘Loyal to the Soil.'” Although Lillard didn’t say why he had to take Weezy down, a different tweet said that Lil Wayne’s “parent label” was the cause.

Although it is unclear whose record label requested to remove Wayne’s verse, Republic Records, a division of Universal Music Group, distributes Cash Money Records, the rapper’s parent company. It wouldn’t be shocking if Cash Money Records requested Lil Wayne’s removal given their continuing conflict with Cash Money Records and Bryan “Birdman” Williams, the label’s co-founder. The rapper and Birdman have been at odds since 2014, when Wayne claimed that Birdman had delayed the release of his album “Tha Carter V.” Lil Wayne eventually sued Birdman and Cash Money Records for $51 million as a result of this.

Wayne has since made jabs at Birdman and Cash Money in songs and live, frequently saying, “F— Cash Money,” as he performs. Wayne did release the “Free Weezy Album” on Tidal, despite not being able to release “Tha Carter V” album. Unfortunately for Wayne, Cortez Bryant, his manager, that release was accompanied by a cease-and-desist letter.
