Ice Cube asserted in a recent interview on DJ Whoo Kid’s podcast that his 1991 diss track, “No Vaseline,” surpasses Tupac Shakur’s “Һit ’Em Up” and Nas’ “Ether.”
During his appearance on DJ Whoo Kid’s Whoo’s House Podcast on July 11, Ice Cube expressed his belief that his diss record ranked higher than those of Tupac and Nas. The discussion arose from an article on The Root that ranked the three diss records, with “Һit ’Em Up” taking the top spot, “Ether” coming in second, and “No Vaseline” in third. DJ Whoo Kid shared this information with Ice Cube, who questioned why Tupac was placed first. According to Ice Cube, Tupac needed lyrical assistance on “Һit ’Em Up,” while he took pride in creating “No Vaseline” as a solo effort.
“How’s 2Pac number one when he needed help on that record?” Ice Cube asked DJ Whoo Kid. “Me, ‘No Vaseline,’ one MC.”
Upon learning about Nas’ position in The Root’s ranking, Ice Cube respectfully disagreed, emphasizing the superiority of “No Vaseline” and providing reasons for his claim.
“I love Nas, but it’s not,” Ice Cube continued. “Took out four n***as and the manager. I meаn, dаmn! Got to give me credit for that.”
“Group was over,” Ice Cube added. “I don’t know if they made another record after that.”
Ice Cube’s “No Vaseline” was a response to N.W.A’s disses on their 100 Miles and Runnin’ EP. Released in 1991 as part of his project Deаth Certificate, the track took aim at his former rap group members and manager, Jerry Heller.
In summarizing his argument, Ice Cube maintained that the impact of “No Vaseline,” which dismantled both the group and their manager, should earn him credit and recognition for creating a diss record that, in his view, surpasses the widely acclaimed tracks by Tupac and Nas.
