The attorney representing the nine-year-old victim who lost their life at the 2021 Astroworld music festival in Houston has issued a response to Travis Scott’s claims of police sabotage.
Last month, Travis Scott’s lawyer, Kent Schaffer, confirmed that the rapper would not face criminal charges related to the crowd surge that resulted in the death of 10 people, including the nine-year-old Ezra Blount.
Expressing sympathy for the victims and their families, Schaffer maintained that Travis Scott is not responsible, and criminal charges against him would not alleviate the pain suffered by the families.
Scott’s legal team had previously accused law enforcement of attempting to ‘sabotage’ his new album, Utopia, with the timing of their investigation release.
Blount’s attorney, Bob Hilliard, criticized the rapper’s team for their ‘tone-deaf comments about this preventable tragedy.’ The family is reportedly planning to sue Scott for the death of their nine-year-old child.
Hilliard, responding to the potential lawsuit and Scott’s statements, stated, “For Mr. Scott to allow his lawyers and spokespeople to make the reckless and untrue statement that just because he was not indicted means he’s blame-free is arrogant and insulting to the memory of [nine-year-old] 10-year-old Ezra as well as the other victims of this terrible night.”
In reaction, Schaffer argued that the lawyer’s comments were driven by frustration for a substantial payday. He acknowledged the police report’s release coinciding with the album launch but emphasized that the report, conducted by law enforcement, concluded that there is no criminal liability on Travis Scott or the festival organizers.
The 56-page event operations plan for the festival outlined protocols for various dangerous scenarios but did not include information on handling a crowd surge. Scott had previously faced criticism for a $5 million donation for community initiatives, with some viewing it as a publicity stunt amid lawsuits from hundreds of people affected by the tragic event.
