Issa Rae Aims to Unite Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, and Megan Thee Stallion Fanbases Through “Rap Sh!t”
Issa Rae has a grand plan to bring together the fanbases of Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, and Megan Thee Stallion, and she’s looking to her HBOMax show “Rap Sh!t” to make it happen.
During an interview with ET published on November 6, Rae discussed the conclusion of season two and shared her vision for the upcoming season. She’s setting her sights high when it comes to guest appearances.
“We have a list,” she revealed. “We want Meg. We want Cardi. Nicki would be a nice little tie-around. If we could unite them… Maybe in season three, we can unite the fan bases, the hives.”
One rapper who probably won’t be making an appearance is Ice Spice, as Issa Rae doesn’t seem to be a fan. During a summer interview with Vanity Fair, Rae asked her co-stars, including Margot Robbie and America Ferrera, who would sing or rap the theme song to her life. She dropped hints like the artist being “alive” and “poppin’.” After some back-and-forth, Ferrera suggested Ice Spice, but Rae responded with a deep sigh and a clear “America, no.”
Rae expressed that she “wouldn’t be mаd” if Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, or Megan Thee Stallion took on the theme song, applauding her co-stars for their choices, seemingly throwing shade at Ice Spice in the process.
“Rap Sh!t” revolves around two Miami high school girls who decide to pursue a rap career. The premise is loosely based on the formation of City Girls, who are also executive producers of the show.
As the executive producer of “Rap Sh!t,” Issa Rae has incorporated personal storylines from her life growing up as she aspired to break into hip-hop as a rapper. However, she won’t make an appearance on the show despite her personal connections to the story.
The second season’s soundtrack is led by Sexyy Red, with her risqué single “No Pаnties,” which is in line with her signature style. She raps, “I ain’t got no pаnties on, gotta let this coochie breathe. Bend that sҺit over, touch them toes, grab your knees. Let that n-gga know just to see it, it’s a fee, got him spendin’ all his cheese. I ain’t got no pаnties on, gotta let this coochie breathe!”
Sexyy shared her excitement about working on “No Pаnties” for “Rap Sh!t” and stated, “It’s just me having fun on the beаt and talking my sh-t. It’s just like the show: The rap girls running this sh-t.”
The soundtrack also includes original music performed by lead characters Shawna (played by Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion), as well as new songs from Rico Nasty, Kali, and more. Guapdad 4000, who appeared in season one, has writing credits on the project.
